GTA 6 download time: how long the reported 210 GB file will take
A reported 210 GB file means GTA 6 could take 56 minutes or nearly a full week to download. Here's how long each internet speed needs before November 19.
Rumour. An unverified leak or claim. Treat it with caution until Rockstar speaks.

Fans have worked out how long Grand Theft Auto 6 will take to download, and the figures vary a lot. The calculations assume the game is about 210 GB. On a fast home connection you could be done in under an hour. On a slow one you would need the whole pre-load week. Vandal reported on October 30 that if you want to play on launch day, the lowest workable speed is roughly 2.8 Mbps, as long as the download never stops.
Where the 210 GB figure comes from
Rockstar has not published an official file size. The 210 GB number comes from a well-known source that pulls information from PlayStation Network servers, according to Vandal. Data from those servers has a decent track record, but it is still unofficial. Treat it as a strong estimate, not a final spec. Patches and a day-one update could also change it.
The launch date is not in doubt: GTA 6 arrives on November 19. Vandal reports that pre-loading opens a week earlier, on November 12. On October 27, the fan account GTA 6 Intel posted the 2.8 Mbps minimum, and Insider Gaming ran its own guide on how much time to set aside.
Download times by connection speed
The first four rows below come from Vandal's report. We added the 50 Mbps and 1 Gbps rows by doing the same maths on the same 210 GB figure.
| Connection speed | Approximate time for 210 GB |
|---|---|
| 2.8 Mbps | About 7 days, non-stop |
| 25 Mbps | 18 hours 40 minutes |
| 50 Mbps | About 9 hours 20 minutes (our calculation) |
| 100 Mbps | 4 hours 40 minutes |
| 500 Mbps | 56 minutes |
| 1 Gbps | About 28 minutes (our calculation) |
These are best-case numbers. They assume your line runs at its full advertised speed the whole time, which almost never happens. Vandal points out that millions of people will be downloading at once, so Sony's and Microsoft's servers will likely be under far more strain than usual. Wi-Fi, other devices on your network and your provider's peak-hour slowdowns all cut into speed too.
Why physical buyers have to download it too
According to Vandal, the boxed edition of GTA 6 doesn't contain a disc. It comes with a download code. That means everyone downloads the full game, whether they bought it digitally or picked up a box in a shop. If you were planning to skip the wait by buying physical, that plan won't work. This also applies if you're getting a console bundle, like the TIM PS5 offer in Brazil.
What to do before November 12
If your connection is anywhere near the slow end of the table, start the pre-load as soon as it opens and leave the console downloading in rest mode. Clear more than 210 GB of space first. Consoles usually need extra room to unpack and install, and the final size isn't confirmed yet. If you can, plug the console in with an ethernet cable instead of relying on Wi-Fi.
Rockstar or the platform stores should confirm the exact file size and pre-load timing once the store listings go live. For every date leading up to launch, see our GTA 6 release date timeline.
