GTA 6 pre-load date and download size on PS5 and Xbox

GTA 6 pre-load opens on November 12, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, a week before the game launches on November 19. Rockstar has confirmed that date. The download size is another matter: the PS5 Standard edition is reported at 210 GB, based on PlayStation Store data. Rockstar hasn't confirmed that figure, and no Xbox size has been published yet.

When does the GTA 6 pre-load start?

The pre-load starts on November 12. That's a full week before launch, and it's the same date on all three consoles, according to Game Over Drive's platform breakdown. Shacknews reported that Rockstar's official statement gave a reason for the long window: it wants everyone ready to play on day one. The PlayStation Store listing data shared by PlayStation Game Size also shows November 12.

What time does the GTA 6 pre-load go live?

Nobody has published an official pre-load time for each region. Game Over Drive says players in Brazil should expect it at midnight Brasília time on November 12. We haven't seen a pre-load clock time for the US, Europe, the UK or Mexico. We'll add them here once they appear.

The unlock time for the game itself is clearer. PlayStation Store timestamps spotted by GTAVice show GTA 6 unlocking at midnight local time on November 19, according to Gfinity Esports. That means a staggered rollout:

• New Zealand: first to play, at midnight on November 19. Game Over Drive says the New Zealand store logs this as 11:00 UTC on November 18. Gfinity puts that at noon on November 18 in Germany.
• Europe and the UK: midnight local time, after Asia-Pacific, per Gfinity.
• United States: midnight Eastern, per Gfinity.
• Brazil: the Brazilian store lists 03:00 UTC on November 19, which Game Over Drive says is midnight in Brasília, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre. Because the store uses a single moment for the whole country, the outlet lists 23h on November 18 in Manaus and Cuiabá, 22h on November 18 in Acre and 1h on November 19 in Fernando de Noronha.
• Mexico and the rest of Latin America: LevelUp says these regions get access later in the cycle than New Zealand. No exact time has been published.

Do you need to pre-order to pre-load GTA 6?

Yes. Dexerto explains that once you pre-order, the pre-load option shows up on the PlayStation and Xbox stores. Digital and physical buyers can both pre-load. The physical edition has no disc. The box holds a download code, and Rockstar is shipping physical copies on November 12 so boxed buyers can redeem their code and start downloading on the same day as everyone else. Shacknews sees a second benefit for Rockstar here: a code that turns up early still can't download or run the game before the official windows, which helps protect the street date.

How big is GTA 6 on PS5?

The reported figure is 210 GB for the Standard edition. It comes from PlayStation Game Size, an account on X that reads upcoming download sizes from the PlayStation Store backend. The account posted it on October 27. Kotaku and Dexerto both say Insider Gaming corroborated the number independently soon after. LevelUp points to the account's track record, which includes accurate sizes for Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring and Tekken 8.

Rockstar hasn't confirmed the number, and it may not be what you end up with on your drive. GamesRadar+ notes that download size and install size often differ. GTA BOOM expects that only compression or a day-one patch would change it much.

For scale, PC Gamer lists GTA 5 at 105.3 GB on PS5. Red Dead Redemption 2 shows an 89.20 GB minimum on the PS Store and recommends 150 GB on Steam. So GTA 6 is roughly double its predecessor. Kotaku points out that it still isn't the biggest console install: several Call of Duty releases and ARK: Survival Evolved with all its DLC take up more.

What is the GTA 6 file size on Xbox Series X and Series S?

There is no Xbox figure yet. Dexerto and LevelUp both say the Xbox Series X|S size is still unknown. Two community sites have made educated guesses. Rockstar Intel thinks the Series X version could be slightly larger, because PS5 games benefit from better compression. It also suggests the Series S version might be smaller if 4K assets are left out. GTA BOOM expects all versions to land in a similar range. Treat both as speculation. Rockstar Intel expects the console install sizes to become clear by November 12, when pre-loading opens.

How much storage space should you clear for GTA 6?

Plan for at least 210 GB of free space on PS5, plus some extra room. Dexerto notes that 210 GB is close to a third of the 667 GB of usable storage on a launch PS5. On an original Xbox Series S, Kotaku's writer expects GTA 6 to fill nearly two-thirds of the usable space.

On PS5, the game has to sit on the internal SSD or on a compatible M.2 NVMe expansion drive to be playable, GTA BOOM says. A regular external hard drive won't do.

The 210 GB figure also leaves some things out. GamesRadar+ expects some kind of day-one update on November 19. Kotaku points out that the number doesn't cover later content updates or the next GTA Online, whenever that arrives. Rockstar hasn't announced a day-one patch or its size.

How long will the GTA 6 download take?

That depends on your connection. The one-week pre-load window exists so that a big download can finish before launch. You'll still need to wait for your region's midnight unlock to play.
