GTA 6 police can send K9 dogs after players on foot

Rockstar's Edge preview of GTA 6 shows police releasing a K9 dog that pins Jason to the ground after a failed motorcycle getaway with Lucia.

Reported. Established outlets report this. Rockstar hasn't said so.

Police in GTA 6 can send dogs after you once you're running on foot. The detail comes from a preview in Edge magazine, as GameSpot reported on October 29. In the demo, Jason and Lucia are fleeing the police when they crash their motorcycle and try to escape on foot. Nearby officers let loose a K9 unit, and a German Shepherd catches Jason and pins him to the ground.

Rockstar's Rob Nelson was playing the demo himself. Edge says the developers watching the session told him not to shoot the dog. It's a small moment, but it shows how far Rockstar has pushed GTA 6's police beyond the ones in GTA 5.

What we already knew about GTA 6's cops

Rockstar has been building up its police systems for a while now. GTA 6 uses a six-star Wanted system, plus an expanded Criminal Profile that lets police search for you more widely than before. Our guide to Wanted levels and Heat explains how the stars work, and our Criminal Profile explainer covers the scale that runs from 'Professional' to 'Irredeemable'.

The police also get help from the city itself. According to GameSpot, the game warns you when a CCTV camera has spotted you, and you can destroy the footage to throw the police off. Officers also remember what Jason and Lucia are wearing, so a change of clothes can be part of getting away.

Dogs had already come up in GTA 6 coverage. GameSpot notes that you can pet a dog or scold it. The police dogs were also part of Edge's wider cover feature, which also covered the map and the game's NPCs.

What it means for players

In earlier GTA games, ditching your vehicle and running into an alley could be a decent last resort. Based on this demo, that's a lot riskier in GTA 6. Once you're on foot, a dog can run you down and hold you until the officers arrive, which makes a crash much more costly.

The idea has a real-world basis. Vice City is Rockstar's version of Miami, and Miami police really do use trained K9 units. GameSpot points out that the city recently added a German Shepherd named Samson, the same breed as the dog that tackles Jason in the demo.

What is still unclear

The big open question is what happens if you fight back. GameSpot takes the developers' warning as a sign that you can shoot police dogs, which fits with GTA 5, where dogs can be killed. Rockstar hasn't said what the game does if you hurt a K9, though, or whether it changes your Wanted level or Criminal Profile.

We also don't know when dogs get sent in. The preview doesn't say how many stars you need before a K9 unit shows up, whether every area has them, or whether you can break free once a dog has you pinned. Those are details players will likely work out in the first week.

They won't have long to wait. GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. GameSpot adds that GTA 6 Online and a PC version could follow in early 2027, but Rockstar hasn't announced a date for either.
