GTA 6 Criminal Profile runs from 'Professional' to 'Irredeemable'

Rockstar's Rob Nelson told Edge GTA 6's Criminal Profile tracks Jason and Lucia from Professional to Irredeemable, shaping how Leonida and the story react.

Confirmed. Rockstar Games or Take-Two said this on the record.

Grand Theft Auto 6 will keep a record of what kind of criminal you are. Speaking to Edge magazine, Rockstar North co-studio head and head of development Rob Nelson described the game's "Criminal Profile", which rates Jason and Lucia on a scale from "Professional" to "Irredeemable". PC Gamer reported the details on October 30, and Brazilian outlets GameVicio and Critical Hits have since added more from the same interview.

All three outlets agree on the basics: angel and devil icons mark the two ends of the scale, and where you sit can change how Leonida's residents treat you and how the story unfolds.

How the Criminal Profile works

Nobody is asking you to play a saint or obey every traffic law. The system cares about how much violence you use and how you use it. A fight doesn't have to end in a death: you can knock an opponent out instead of killing them, or try intimidation or a bribe before drawing a gun. Critical Hits sums it up simply: knocking enemies out moves you toward Professional, while killing people indiscriminately pushes you toward Irredeemable.

Nelson stressed that Rockstar isn't pushing one playstyle. "There isn't a right or wrong way to play this game," he said, adding that consistent behaviour may affect both how the world reacts to you and how the narrative plays out.

You can also work your way back. Both PC Gamer and GameVicio say Nelson explained that small acts of kindness can help redeem your standing. PC Gamer's examples, like dropping litter in a bin or feeding birds at a park, only appear in its piece, and it isn't clear if they are Nelson's words or the writer's own illustrations. Treat those specifics loosely for now.

Crimes that bite back

Critical Hits reports two more details from the interview. First, crimes are meant to be less predictable. Nelson apparently raised the idea that a pedestrian you rob could come back and attack you, so even a simple mugging might not go to plan.

Second, the campaign will sometimes make you wait, for example until you've raised enough money or until a phone call comes in, before the next mission opens. According to the outlet, that's meant to leave room for side activities and exploring, which fits what Edge has said about the map opening up early for free exploration. Critical Hits also says your choices can affect Jason and Lucia's relationship, though the main story still runs within limits Rockstar has set. That lines up with how central the pair are to the plot, as covered in our piece on Jason and Lucia's relationship.

What we already knew

The Criminal Profile first came up in an earlier IGN preview, where Nelson said the system grew partly out of a worry that the protagonists could otherwise become too powerful. The Edge interview adds the names of the two extremes, clearer examples of non-lethal options and the redemption angle. For more from that magazine, see our roundup of the GTA 6 Edge cover feature.

PC Gamer compares the system to Red Dead Redemption 2's honor mechanic, and Critical Hits goes further, describing it as directly inspired by it. That's how the outlets frame it, not something Rockstar has said in the quotes we have. The difference this time seems to be the focus on how you handle a confrontation, not only on whether you start one.

What's still unclear

For a series known for chaos without consequences, this is a real change. If you're after a particular version of Jason and Lucia's story, you'll probably have to think about how you handle robberies and standoffs, not just whether you finish them.

The big questions remain open. As GameVicio points out, Rockstar hasn't said which story moments the Profile affects or how big the changes are. We also don't know if endings differ, how quickly good deeds can make up for a rampage, or if Jason and Lucia share one score or each have their own. Answers shouldn't be far off: GTA 6 launches on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
