Nintendo's US boss defers GTA 6 Switch 2 question to Rockstar

Nintendo of America president Devon Pritchard told Variety a GTA 6 Switch 2 port is a matter for Take-Two and Rockstar, with nothing to announce for now.

Confirmed. Rockstar Games or Take-Two said this on the record.

Nintendo of America president Devon Pritchard won't be the one to tell Switch 2 owners whether GTA 6 is coming. Variety asked her whether Rockstar's game might eventually be ported to Nintendo's hybrid console, and she said the decision belongs to Rockstar's parent company and the studio. "That's going to be a conversation for Take-Two and Rockstar, but nothing to announce on my end at this time," Pritchard said. Kotaku highlighted the remarks on October 9.

That isn't a no. It isn't a hint of a yes either. It's a polite handoff, and it leaves the Switch 2 situation where it has been all along: no announcement and no timeline.

Where things stand

GTA 6 launches on November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. As Kotaku points out, that makes Switch 2 the only current console without the game this fall. Nintendo's own big release lands just before it: Kotaku reports the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake arrives on November 5, two weeks before GTA 6.

The bigger open question is technical. Nobody outside Rockstar knows whether Switch 2 could run GTA 6 to an acceptable standard, and neither company has said anything about it. If you want the full history of Switch 2 claims, from hopeful leaks to fan speculation, our GTA 6 Switch 2 rumour roundup covers what has and hasn't held up.

The Rockstar games Switch 2 is still missing

GTA 6 isn't the only gap. Kotaku notes that Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 5 have both skipped Switch 2 so far. By Kotaku's count, those two are among only four games from the all-time top ten best-sellers that aren't on the system. The other two are PUBG and Wii Sports.

At least one studio wants the job. Virtuous, the company behind the Switch port of Rockstar's L.A. Noire, has said publicly that it would like to bring both open-world games to Nintendo hardware. Technical director Fong told Pocket Tactics that the "team is eager to adapt Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 for the Nintendo Switch," and added that the team members are big fans of both games. That's a studio saying what it wants to do, not a deal: neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has announced either port.

Kotaku also argues that GTA 5 makes a lot of sense for Switch 2 if GTA 6 can't run on it. GTA Online is still hugely popular, and Rockstar hasn't revealed any plan to shut it down.

What it means for Switch 2 players

In the short term, nothing changes. If you want to play GTA 6 on November 19, you need a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar hasn't confirmed a PC version either, and some analysts expect one later (see Michael Pachter's mid-2027 PC prediction). Switch 2 owners who want a trip to Vice City this November can still play Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy, The Definitive Edition, which Kotaku notes is playable on Nintendo's console.

In the longer term, Pritchard's answer shows who makes the call. Any Switch 2 version of GTA 6, GTA 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2 would be announced by Take-Two and Rockstar, not Nintendo. Take-Two's quarterly earnings calls are the usual place for platform news. Until the company says something on the record, treat any Switch 2 port claim as speculation. For the road to launch day, our GTA 6 release date timeline tracks every delay up to November 19.
